Cerium's Story
Backstory
Cerium Stonebloom was born deep beneath the earth in the sprawling tunnels of his family’s underground quarry. His parents, Torga and Bormund, ran the Stonebloom Quarry, a prosperous family business that had been passed down through generations. While they were proud of their mining legacy, they always encouraged their son to explore his own path. Cerium had shown an unusual connection to the natural world from a young age. Even as a child, he could speak with the small creatures of the earth, coaxing plants to grow in the cracks of stone and communicating with the creatures in the dark corners of the quarry. His parents, though focused on their business, could see that Cerium was destined for something beyond stone and ore.
As he grew older, Cerium’s connection to nature deepened. He would often sneak away from the quarry to explore the nearby forests, feeling a pull toward the ancient trees and the shifting leaves. His ability to sense the pulse of the earth was unlike anything his parents had ever seen, and they supported his growing fascination with druidic magic. They believed that Cerium could find a path in the wilds that was just as valuable as the stone they worked with. Though they didn’t fully understand the powers their son wielded, they trusted his instincts.
At the age of 50, Cerium left his family to seek formal training. His heart longed to understand more about the magic that flowed through the world, so he ventured into the nearby forest, where he sought out the wisdom of [[../Other/Oogway|Oogway]], a reclusive tortle druid who had lived for decades in seclusion. Oogway was a druid of the forest, a keeper of ancient knowledge, and a guardian of the balance between life and death. When Cerium approached him, Oogway sensed the raw potential in the young dwarf, and though he had reservations, he agreed to teach him.
Under Oogway’s tutelage, Cerium learned the ways of the forest druids. He honed his natural abilities to commune with the creatures of the land, control the growth of plants, and protect the balance of nature. As his training continued, Cerium’s fascination with nature only grew. But the more he learned, the more he began to feel that the teachings of Oogway were too narrow. While Oogway emphasized preserving life, Cerium felt the need to explore nature’s darker aspects—the forces of decay, transformation, and rebirth that were just as integral to the cycle of life.
Oogway was patient with Cerium’s questions, understanding that the young dwarf’s curiosity came from a place of wanting to learn. Over time, Cerium began experimenting with alchemy, a practice he had never fully explored before. Oogway had some knowledge of the alchemical arts, and so he introduced Cerium to the study of potions and transmutation. Cerium soon became captivated by the process of combining natural ingredients to create powerful elixirs and brews. Alchemy, for Cerium, was a way to bridge the gap between the spiritual magic of the druids and the more scientific, transformative approach he had always been drawn to. Under Oogway’s guidance, Cerium learned to blend these two worlds—nature’s magic and alchemical science.
But even as Cerium grew more proficient in both his druidic magic and alchemy, he found himself pulled toward darker, more dangerous teachings. He heard whispers of an underground enclave of spore druids—the Lanthidium Enclave—who embraced decay, death, and transformation in a way that Oogway’s teachings did not. They believed that fungi, mold, and the spread of spores were essential parts of the cycle of life and death, forces that could be harnessed to manipulate nature in ways that went beyond Oogway’s philosophies. Cerium’s fascination with decay grew, and soon, the Circle of Lanthidium became the object of his desire.
Against Oogway’s teachings, Cerium sought out the Spore Druid enclave. The Circle welcomed him, seeing his potential as a practitioner of both druidic magic and alchemy. There, Cerium learned to manipulate spores to create monstrous, fungal creatures and harness the energy of death and decay to fuel his power. His experiments grew bolder, and he began to see death not as an end, but as a tool—something that could be used to reshape the world.
Cerium’s betrayal of Oogway came swiftly. He abandoned his mentor and aligned himself with the Lanthidium Enclave, believing that the power they offered was the true path to understanding the world’s magic. But Oogway, ever vigilant, soon learned of Cerium’s defection. He was heartbroken by the betrayal but determined to stop Cerium from spiraling further into darkness. He gathered a small group of druids, including some of his closest allies, and set out to confront the young dwarf.
The confrontation was violent and heartbreaking. Oogway fought with all the wisdom and power of a seasoned druid, calling on the forces of the forest to tear down Cerium’s spore-infested creations. Cerium, consumed by the power of decay, resisted fiercely, but Oogway’s mastery of the natural world was overwhelming. The Lanthidium Enclave was defeated. Many of its members were slain, and others scattered into the wilds, fleeing from Oogway’s wrath. Cerium himself was left broken, fleeing the battlefield with nothing but his knowledge of the spores and a deep, burning desire for revenge.
Desperate to escape Oogway’s pursuit, Cerium boarded a ship called The Wandering Star, a vessel known for traveling far from the reaches of the world’s more predictable paths. With the ship setting sail to distant lands, Cerium sought refuge on the open seas, knowing that Oogway would not stop until he had brought the dwarf to justice. Cerium’s heart burned with a need for vengeance—not just for his own survival, but to prove that the Lanthidium Enclave was the true path to unlocking the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth.
Now, as The Wandering Star carries him across unknown waters, Cerium wrestles with his decision to betray Oogway. The spores still pulse within him, and though his heart is filled with rage, there’s a small seed of doubt. Was Oogway right? Has Cerium sacrificed too much in his pursuit of power? The journey ahead is unclear, but Cerium is resolute: he will rebuild the Lanthidium Enclave, stronger and more powerful than ever, and he will return to show Oogway the true cost of his failure to understand the deeper forces of nature. Whether for revenge or redemption, Cerium’s path is now set—and only the spores know where it will lead.
